So the other day, while enjoying some evening television with my good friend Corey, I had an extreme convergence experience. We were watching some general cable show, maybe something on Comedy Central and chatting during the commercial break, when Corey suddenly stopped talking and was like “What is this song?! Who sings it?” I looked up to see this commercial playing.
Now that was just the beginning. Camp Vegas seemed like a pretty fun place, but we wanted to know the song…So I whipped out my HTC Hero, android-y smart phone and used the incredible app, Shazam! Which listens to the song playing then tells you what it is! It’s pretty cool but because that commercial is 16 seconds long…it did not work in this case.
This is what Shazam looks like…check it out…you can also download it for a computer!
Next, we were still without the name and my phone had let me down…but then we remembered Google knows all, so I did a little search for the lyrics of “oh oh…what are you waiting for” and luckily the internet is amazing and some other people have been trying to find the same stuff as me.
From there I was able to jump to YouTube…yes still all on my phone…jeez I love that thing and see the actual music video for the band.
And BOOM there was the information we were looking for!
Neon Trees was the Band, and it was there song Animal!
Wooo Success, but the convergence did not even stop there!
Corey then busted out her IMac, and jumped onto ITunes(yes she’s a Mac, I’m a PC…on the verge of Mac-hood) and began downloading the song.
At the same time, I jumped on Amazon and did the same with my phone…who needs a computer these days!
Basically, it is absolutely crazy how much can be done from a pocket-sized device, and also the commercial may have inspired us to start looking into future travel plans…Maybe New Years in Vegas?! I can only hope!
So there is my converging from the couch story…from TV, to phone, to internet, to computer, and eventually it will be put onto our IPods for sure! Who would have thought so much could come from one commercial! Way to go Vegas and Neon Trees! It amazes me every time something like this happens and I realize how far technology has come. I can’t imagine having been able to do this just a few years ago, it shows how technology is affecting us, and how we need to be constantly entertained…I don’t even know what TV show we were watching, but I don’t think we ever finished it.
Shazam, Convergence Kathleen!
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful blog post about the power of convergence - you write very well.
I look forward to more excellent blogging, and git off the couch from time to time, eh?
