The Obama Brand- Top 10 Revelations

“This is the lesson of all great television commercials: They provide a slogan, a symbol or a focus that creates for viewers a comprehensive and compelling image of themselves. In the shift from party politics to television politics, the same goal is sought. We are not permitted to know who is best at being President or Governor or Senator, but whose image is best in touching and soothing the deep reaches of our discontent” (Postman 134).

1) $ Barack Obama Had Connections to BIG MONEY

Barack Obama had many connections to people with big money in the media and elsewhere which was necessary for a strong campaign. This fact was not portrayed in the media but they did acknowledge the fact that he refused donations from corporate lobbyists and PACS. “Mainstream US media, while dismissing Edwards’ supposedly false populism and portraying Hillary Clinton as the candidate with connections to big money, largely ignored this angle of the Obama Story” (Street 13). This quote comes from Paul Street’s book, Barack Obama and the Future of American Politics. Obama continued to denounce accepting money from lobbyists but at the same time, he had become a millionaire and was purchasing a mansion. He was getting money from many rich and powerful contributors such as Goldman Sachs and Exelon Corporation.

This shows the supporters and how much money they raised. (The organizations themselves did not donate, rather the money came from the organization's PAC, its individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates. {From Opensecrets.org})

Here is an article that goes further into explain how 90% of Obama’s inauguration donations are from wall street.

2) Obama was the first candidate to utilize social media to win a campaign.

In the past few years social media has become to go-to method for most brands in America who are looking to build a more direct connection with their consumers. This is not any different than how Obama sold himself to Americans. He used social media in the same way any other brand would, to get his messages directly to his fans.

obamatweet<image from http://twitter.com/#!/BarackObama>

Barack utilized Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube among other programs to bypass the media and connect with an internet based audience. This article shows how Obama successful used these tools to win the 2008 elections. Paul Street, the author of Barack Obama and the Future of American Politics talks about this phenomenon in his book. “"Brand Obama’s” pure media-created celebrity-hood has been a major factor in his ascendancy, particularly with regard to younger voters” (Street 169).

image <image from http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/social_media_obama_mccain_comparison.php>

3) Obama’s image in the media was largely concerned with portraying an ordinary, all-American, family man.

In order to win the US vote it is important for candidates to connect with the citizen and give them the “warm-fuzzies”. People want to feel like the person who is running our country and making huge decisions is a good person with a strong heart and Obama’s family was a key ingredient for putting together that image. He was always surrounded by them and they joined him during the campaign trail, looking happy and supportive and full of smiles.

Neil Postman, in his book Amusing Ourselves to Death; Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business, talks of how photography tells people the truth about a subject, or at least that is the way it seems. In the case of politics, its more likely that photography is used to show what they WANT you to see, not what is truly there. “The new imagery, with photography at its forefront, did not merely function as a supplement to language, but bid to replace it as our dominant means for construing, understanding, and testing reality…For countless Americans, seeing, not reading, became the basis for believing” (Postman 74).

4) Voter’s may have sipped the Obama cool-aid and did not consider the real issues.

In reading about Obama and the election process, I learned that a lot of people who supported him did it for various reasons which were not necessarily his stances on American politics. Some supported him for the ideal of him being the first black president in America or because he seemed younger and fresher than the other candidates. Paul Street states in his book that, “Obama’s technical nonwhiteness and vaguely Islamic-sounding name (Barack Hussein Obama) would prove highly useful in repairing America’s relationships with the rest of the world” (Street 135). This was a strong belief across America, people though that we would prove something to the world by electing a black man as President.

Obama speaking in Nebraska- “We will remake this world!”

This video shows how Obama uses this idea to persuade people. It can be taken by what he says that if he becomes president, he won’t only help America, but he will help the entire world. Good luck to him on that one, we have a lot of problems.

image<Image from http://www.cartoonstock.com/newscartoons/directory/g/global_issues.asp>

5) A majority of the media we receive is controlled by a small percentage of the population, and it seems they supported Obama.

A quote from Media/Society: Industries, Images and Audiences by David Croteau and William Hoynes describes the ownership of the US media, what we see and here on the television, newspapers and radio, and how it is manipulated to support a small group of peoples opinions. “White, middle- and upper-class men have historically controlled the medias industry, and media content has largely reflected their perspectives on the world” (Croteau, Hoynes 195). This explains in many ways why the media covers certain stories and not others which often happens in US coverage of world events.

In Obama’s case, this worked to his advantage, he managed to make strong connections with people involved in the media and in doing so, he got a lot more positive press than his contenders for the US presidency.  In a study done by the Center for Media and Public Affairs it was found that, “ABC recorded 57 percent favorable comments toward the Democrats, and 42 percent positive for the Republicans. NBC had 56 percent positive for the Democrats, 16 percent for the Republicans. CBS had 73 percent positive (Obama), versus 31 percent (McCain).” {From http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D945SHBG1&show_article=1}

image<Image from http://www.hapblog.com/2009_04_01_archive.html>

This shows how the media put Obama in a good light more often then the other candidates and since Americans get a majority of their news from television, it is not surprising he won the election.

6) As Neil Postman describes, we have lost our attention spans and debates have now been turned into entertainment where we focus on “likability” not the issues.

For many people, watching a debate on television really has nothing to do with what the candidates are saying, because how much can really be said in 1 minute snippets of information? Many Americans don’t like politics because it is challenging to understand all of the issues, or to be passionate about things that feel out of control, so we have simply made the elections into popularity contests, like any other reality TV show.

image
<Image from
http://veggierevolution.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html>

As Neil Postman describes how telegraphy changed the information we receive and what that has done to the quality of information, it remains the same for the television and internet generations. “Telegraphy made relevance irrelevant. The abundant flow of information had very little or nothing to do with those to whom it was addressed; that is, with any social or intellectual context in which their lives were embedded” (Postman 67).

Students discussing Hillary Clinton’s “likeability” in her campaign

This video shows how much we focus on tone and behavior over content and actual experience. The students do a good job of seeing both sides of her campaign but the best quote I heard was “she reminds me a teacher from grade school, a really angry teacher.”  It really is about behavior and the gut feelings we get from their speeches not necessarily what they are saying.

7) Obama inspired the Millennial Generation to get involved in politics

Going off the last idea, a huge part of Obama’s support came from the 20-something, college demographic and he did a good job of connecting with this group. Besides his huge social media influence that I discussed above, he managed to make a group of individuals feel like they were important and their opinions mattered.

In Paul Street’s book, a staffer was quoted as saying “Oh, you can’t talk policy and issues with the Obama people. Don’t even try. There is no discussion with them. They already know everything”(Street 135). I don’t necessarily agree with it completely but I think it is important to note that for the Millennial generation it was the first time that many of them took the time to know the politics and could engage in intellectual conversations with other older adults. I think Obama empowered this generation to feel they could share what they knew!

Barack Obama giving the Top 10 Surprising Facts about himself on The Late Show

This video also shows that Obama did what he could to engage with the demographic, by using interests that they had, such as late night TV shows, interviews in popular magazines and online content he was able to get them interested in politics.

8) American were Excited for Someone New and Fresh

Obama was the answer to Americans desire for something new and entertaining. John Kerry was quoted in Barack Obama and the Future of American Politics as saying, “Americans are hungry for a directness and freshness that speaks to the public fatigue with politics as usual” (Street 170). He was different from other politicians we had seen and that made people sit up and notice. He was bi-racial, grew up in Hawaii, had a different sounding name but was also articulate and Harvard educated. He stood out because he was handsome and well-spoken and he had that smile Smile. He was just the fresh face America was looking for.

image<Image from http://bigsole.blogspot.com/2008/11/obama-comedian-rahm-emanuels-roast-plus.html>

9) Obama was shown as almost God-like in many media outlets; he was the “Americas Savior”

I discussed before how the media put more positive coverage of Obama then the other candidates, but I did not mention the way Americans began to treat him as a god-like image. “As Xenophanes remarked twenty-five centuries ago, men always make their gods in their own image. But to this, television politics has added a new wrinkle: Those who would be gods refashion themselves into images the viewers would have them be” (Postman 135). This quote really speaks as to what American media did in this case. I don’t think before this election we ever had rock stars making music videos to show their support such as thing one below.

Video by Dave Stewart and many other celebrity cameos who support Barack Obama- American Prayer

Then there was the magazine covers, such as this Newsweek cover with the caption “God of All Things”!

image<Image fromhttp://www.hindu-blog.com/2010_11_01_archive.html>

And of course there is always the way Rolling Stone portrayed him in a Superhero-like cover.

image<Image from http://www.foliomag.com/2008/cover-critique-rolling-stones-barack-obama-endorsement>

With all of this media portrayal of him as a superhero, its no wonder peoples hopes will eventually be let down. He did go into office with a lot of huge problems to fix and he is only human, even if the media doesn’t think so.

10) Many Americans assumed things about Obama’s ideas that he neither confirmed or denied during the elections, such as what he would do about Iraq and Guantanamo Bay

“As of late February 2008, Democratic voters commonly believed that Obama was promising a quick and complete withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq. But in actual fact…the most Obama actually pledges was “to try to remove all combat brigades within 16 to 18 months”” (Street 144). This quote from Street’s Barack Obama and the Future of American Politics shows how the media and Americans misrepresented what Obama actually said, to mean very different things. Many people believe he made promises to do this these things the moment he stepped into the office, when in fact he knew that was not completely possible.

Clips from various interviews and speeches from Obama on War

This video, from Barack Obama’s YouTube channel, is an example of Obama’s opinions on the war over the years and how he has opposed it. It is not realistic to think we could have pulled out from Iraq as soon as he was elected but I think at least he admits it’s a frustrating situation and is doing what he can to make those changes.

For more on what Barack Obama has actually done, check out this site http://whatthefuckhasobamadonesofar.com/ which lists many of the positive change he has created over the past years in office.

Media Meditation #4 Pirate Radio–How One Boat Saved an Entire Genre of Music!

“Pirate Radio” Official Trailer

Wednesday night I watched Pirate Radio for the first time, when it came out in 2009 I had thought it would be amusing but never got around to seeing it. I found out I wasn’t missing to much. Although the movie had quirky British humor which I do love, the plot of the story came up short for me, there were many times I was bored and not engaged.

This was surprising though because the movie did have a killer soundtrack in my option, set in the 1960’s the movie had an easy go at attacking the limbic brain with well-known classic songs. Each time I heard one I was pulled back in; The Kinks, The Who, and David Bowie each song fit the mood and energy that the film should have had.

David Bowie- Let’s Dance from YouTube

I mean its hard to compete with the greatness of Bowie but I found this movie to be kind of a flop, on a separate note, I did learn a lot about the history of radio censorship in England and there were a few quality quotes from the movie I think are worth sharing as well discuss Censored 2011 in class.

The Count: To all our listeners, this is what I have to say - God bless you all. And as for you bastards in charge, don't dream it's over. Years will come, years will go, and politicians will do fuck all to make the world a better place. But all over the world, young men and young women will always dream dreams and put those dreams into song. Nothing important dies tonight, just a few ugly guys on a crappy ship. The only sadness tonight is that, in future years, there'll be so many fantastic songs that it will not be our privilege to play. But, believe you me, they will still be written, they will still be sung and they will be the wonder of the world.

I think the movie also had a great message about standing up to censorship in the media and doing what is right for the people and not what the government deems correct. I like the fact that it is based on a true story and I think that for many people this will bring nostalgia for a time where things were much more free spirited.

Media Meditation #3 The Girl Effect (or lack of effectiveness)

The Girl Effect

In my Brand and Account Managment class a few weeks ago, we were talking about advertising and for some reason we were shown this video for The Girl Effect which is an organization which is trying to empower females in suffering communities. This video is all limbic and neocortex, the music is soothing and allows you to read the words and try to gage what the meaning is. It does however have very fast pacing so you stay engaged and the persuasive techniques are strong but in many ways they are avoiding the important topics, after watching this clip I still had no idea what I was supposed to do with the information.

Throughout the video it asks rhetorical questions that make you feel guilty for the world issues at hand. They also give a simple solution…a girl? Okay so they back it up with some examples on how a girl could potentially change the world, but honestly I don’t see why a boy could not do the same things. I do believe that girls should be empowered but with this video I am confused as to if they really are.

I visited the website to learn more about this project and found it somewhat more informative but it was still set up as to distract from the actual purpose by looking really cool and edgy. girl

Image from <http://www.girleffect.org/learn/the-big-picture >

Everything is put into black and white, they have no gray zone of how things could change, either you donate money to 12 and 13 year old girls and their lives turn out perfect. Or you don’t. And if you don’t these girls will be married off, knocked up, die in childbirth, or get AIDS and die. They use fear and group dynamic to pressure people into helping. I don’t feel strongly that this organization is really helping…

Also, there are some underlying questions of ownership- who made this organization? Nike! It is never said anywhere on the website or the videos but if you search through the About Us section of the website you can see that the Nike Foundation website is where all the real information is. If I had read that page first, I think I would support this cause so much more, but the way they are advertising makes me question their motives, it seems distracting and not very serious, when changing the world in this way is a very serious issue.

Here is another video of a Parody of their video that breaks down all the issues that the Girl Affect avoids in their original claims. I think it helps to balance the issue and should make the organization question their campaign a little more.

The Girl Effect Parody-Idiot Effect

This video shows a different side of all of the issues involved and the group that created it, http://www.corrupt.org/ has a lot of strong view points and is definitely an interesting site. I don’t agree with all their statements but I think they really do a good job of analyzing The Girl Affect message and trying to make people think more deeply about what is really going on.

Mid-Semester Reflection- “Follow effective action with quiet reflection. From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.” -Peter F. Drucker

1) After Studying media for eight weeks in this class, what have you learned? Please be specific

Now that we are eight weeks in the course I feel like I have learned a lot of things in many different areas, having taken Mass Media and Society w/ R. Williams my sophomore year, I had previously used the Power Tools that we began the class with, but I had sadly lost some of that power. Using the tools again was a great refresher and I find myself now analyzing every media that I come in contact with. So much so my brother will no longer watch the Patriots games with me. Aside from those great skills, which I think will be very important to me as a marketer. I felt I learned a lot about the United States society and how it has changed with books such as Amusing Ourselves to Death. This book showed how things over the years have changed our society and made me reflect on myself as someone who uses technology everyday. I found the information about how photography changed the way we looked at news to be particularly interesting because I have always found articles more interesting with photos but never really understood why. I think there are so many important things that we reflect on in this class, that will allow us to be more successful in the media driven society, it makes me think deeper about marketing and information I receive and makes me consider the ownership of this media and how that is reflected in the information. I believe many Americans take information without considering this and it could lead us into a society similar to the reality constructed in the novel Feed and that is terrifying.

2) What is the most important thing you have learned about yourself as a critical reader, a writer, and a thinker in this class so far?

I think the most important thing I have developed in this class so far, is realizing the importance of being a critical thinker. I have always avoided the talks on politics and government because I was to lazy to consider the issues fully, but through this course I realized that it is important to be knowledgeable about this issues as well as other news and happenings in our society, as well as other societies around the world because it does impact me. I enjoyed the reflective readings we have done in the class because it allowed me to work on reading critically. I have always been person who reads things for the general meaning, but pulling out small facts and details made me see whole other sides to the stories. I am not sure if my writing has improved but I find the class blog a great way to compare my writing to others and to challenge myself further as a writer.

3) What’s one thing you would do differently this first half of the semester if you were to take this class again?

If I was to start this class over again, I think I would begin by doing the readings more critically so I could absorb more of the information. I read all the material but I didn’t think to apply it to my life as a marketing major. A lot of the information we have read in books such as Amusing Ourselves to Death is important to consider in marketing. The history of how advertising began with newspapers and photography and knowing how people respond to that, and how it has changed is also important.

4) What’s one thing you would like me to do differently this first half of the semester if you were to take this class again?

I took Mass Media and Society my sophomore year and many of the things we discuss with the media tools are very repetitive. Although I enjoy the tools, I would like for it to go even further or use different materials because I have seen many of the media materials already.

5) Please comment on the usefulness of the power tools, our quizzes, the course blog, your personal blog, our films, and our books( Amusing Ourselves to Death, Feed, Media/Society, Project Censored) as learning tools.
The Course Blog- I find our Course Blog to be the most helpful tool in the class, I love that there is an easy and useful place that I can check in and see what we are doing, go over what we have done, and see where there is homework all in one location. I love that it is interactive and that as a class, we all get to participate in building it and the convergence of having all the material in one place is great.

The Power Tools- I loved the power tools the first time we used them, but like I said in the previous question, they feel very repetitive to me this semester. I do enjoy the insight they give me into material, as well as, the helpfulness and power they give me as a marketer. I find myself using them in many of my other classes and in my daily life.

Our Quizzes- The quizzes are a great, fun learning tool. They help me tell where I am with the Power Tools and also allow us to see a range of other content we may not just stumble upon on the internet. I think they are important but sometimes unnecessary because I have already seen some of the content.

My Personal Blog-  I think its great that each person in the class has their own place on the web to create content. I think it would be interesting to do more with reading each others blogs, because sometimes it feels like we are typing to no one and where is the fun of a blog without the followers. I also have trouble with putting my own personality into this blog because it has certain defined criteria but that is understandable since it is part of a class.

The Films- The films and short video clips we have watched this semester have led me to think more critically about the content of the media that we are seeing. Reel Bad Arabs was a shocking film for me and made me consider things I normally would not have thought about and also how a change could be made.

I also found the video The Machine is Us/ing Us by Kansas State University to be a great introduction into the class and made me think about how technology is changing our society and how that is affect me as a college student, and how it will affect my future.

These, along with the short clips have added a lot of depth to the class and also a different form of entertaining content, because as Neil Postman suggests, we are Amusing Ourselves to Death.

The Books- I had read Feed by MT Anderson before this class because of a recommendation from a friend, I found that I could not put the book down, but also that it gave me chills because of how easily I could imagine the society that the book depicts. I think the shock factor that Anderson gives really wakes you up and makes you think about what technology is doing to our nation. feed

Image from < http://myworldofbooks.wordpress.com/2010/02/14/feed-2/ >

Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman was a more challenging read which I had trouble getting through but the information was so important to have read. I think that the book alone would be hard but adding in the class discussion really made the time spent reading worth it.

amusing

Image From < http://www.acrossthepage.net/2009/07/26/amusing-ourselves-to-death/ >

Media Society by David Croteau and William Hoynes came across at first textbook like, but the writing remained interesting because they gave relevant stories and facts which made each text unique and worth the time to read. I found the class blog to be really important during these posts because I was able to pick up on things I missed by reading other peoples responses.

Project Censored: “Feed” for Real- India giving 1.2 Billion People Biometric ID Cards

Censored 2011’s number 22 most censored story is, 1.2 Billion People in India to be Given Biometric ID Cards

idImage From of < http://www.puppetgov.com/2009/06/27/india-to-institute-national-id-card/ >

  • These cards hold a persons: Name, age, birth date, and either fingerprints or iris scan
  • They will not have caste or religious information
  • Forty-two percent of India’s population is below the poverty line; this ID system will help citizens because they will no longer have trouble identifying themselves.

old man Image From < http://www.puppetgov.com/2009/09/18/india-population-to-be-given-biometric-id-cards/ >

  • The Biometric number will be entered every time a person accesses services from government departments, DMV offices, and hospitals, as well as other offices.
  • India is hoping this will lead to more people paying income taxes (Only 5% do right now!)
  • Lack of identification causes citizens to not be included in many programs which help people in need, the ID cards will prevent this and allow them the benefits.
  • The plan is to reach 600 million people in the next 5 years (by 2014)
  • Estimated cost for the project is $3.5 billion
  • This will hopefully also protect people, because it will prevent events such as the 2008 Mumbai attacks by boosting security

Home Security GK Pillai talks about the Biometric ID Cards and Census

Although this story is considered “Censored” in the United States, by google-ing the title, I was able to come up with hundreds of results with relevant information, mostly from other countries. The US might not be talking about this but the rest of the world is and India is also not afraid to share. Many of these articles have repetitive information but an important one to check out is India’s Unique Identification Authority of India Website  which has lots of information on the planning and objectives of the Biometric ID Cards and how the process will be completed.

Here are a few links which have the story and more information:

India Launches Biometric Census- BBC News

India issues biometric ID to entire population- Wired.co.uk

India to issue all 1.2 billion citizens with biometric ID cards- The Times Online- UK

One billion Indians to get biometric ID cards- Computerweekly.com

The video below gives more information about what is happening with the ID cards and how people in other parts of the world as feeling about them.

A video from RussiaToday about the India Census

In doing the Lexis Nexis search I was able to come across other articles with similar information, but very few from US sources, most were actually articles which could be found just by searching for “India Biometric ID Cards”, it was very easy to find information about this topic. The vibe I got when trying to analyze why this would be censored in the United States may be because we are in similar talks about having a similar ID process.

Media Mediation #2 Britney Spears is a gateway drug to every out of control impulse!

Well yes, that title does look true right here! I mean Britney Spears can tame snakes and dance at the same time. Talk about a reptilian brain bomb! For anyone born in the late 80's/early 90's Britney has been an icon we have grown up with and as she made her own life mistake, we all were able to realize how much better we were at winning the game of life.

Britney had fallen to the back of my mind recently, no new kids, no new hair, she was just off living her life somewhere and I think both of us may have been okay with her taking a break from the spotlight. However, on Tuesday September 28th she came flying back into my life with an amazing episode of Glee! The all-Britney episode was pretty flippin' amazing in my own opinion. Maybe this is because of the nostalgia of flash backs to the old Britney Spears with the cast hallucinating they are reenactmenting of some of Britney's best videos.

My personal favorite was Britney S Pierce (Heather Morris) doing Britney's "I'm a Slave for You", I think this could be a break out moment for her career.

Now this vid may have been a little racy for TV, and I am not quiet sure why there are children in it but I think it definitely does Britney justice. This whole episode was an attack on the reptilian brain, splashing in plenty of limbic, bringing the music back from the 90's, everyone I was watching it was very effected. The whole room was smiling for no real reason at all. Of course having "Uncle Jesse"(John Stamos) in the episode didn't hurt them either!

As we watched we were also impressed by how well the cast did in reenacting the videos from the originals, below is the side-by-side version of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" with Britney's original version and Lea Michele's version from the episode. The production techniques were very true to the original, making all real Britney fans probably very pleased (no I do not consider myself a Britney fan). This video came from Perez Hilton's Blog, which is another great example of the entertainment coming from the internet, I could read it for hours and just laugh as he brings different medias together to talk and mock them.

Basically, the show brought back all my old feelings about Britney, and 9 year old me really thought she was pretty cool and successful. Hopefully this episode will be a PR dream for her and she can lose some of the negative press, but who knows, she keeps getting herself into it. Although, the wise words of Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) will haunt me and always remind me "Don't let your own recklessness blind you to the fact that Britney Spears is a genius pop culture provocateur and a gateway drug to every out of control impulse ever created."

For more of her witty one-liners, check her out on Twitter This episode has once again reminded me of how television can be addicting and drug like, because I cannot wait for next weeks episode, "Grilled Cheesus" where Glee seems to be finding some religion. Should be interesting!

Media Meditation #1 Converging from the Couch

vega So the other day, while enjoying some evening television with my good friend Corey, I had an extreme convergence experience. We were watching some general cable show, maybe something on Comedy Central and chatting during the commercial break, when Corey suddenly stopped talking and was like “What is this song?! Who sings it?” I looked up to see this commercial playing.

Now that was just the beginning. Camp Vegas seemed like a pretty fun place, but we wanted to know the song…So I whipped out my HTC Hero, android-y smart phone and used the incredible app, Shazam! Which listens to the song playing then tells you what it is! It’s pretty cool but because that commercial is 16 seconds long…it did not work in this case.

androidThis is what Shazam looks like…check it out…you can also download it for a computer!

Next, we were still without the name and my phone had let me down…but then we remembered Google knows all, so I did a little search for the lyrics of “oh oh…what are you waiting for” and luckily the internet is amazing and some other people have been trying to find the same stuff as me.

From there I was able to jump to YouTube…yes still all on my phone…jeez I love that thing and see the actual music video for the band.

And BOOM there was the information we were looking for!

Neon Trees was the Band, and it was there song Animal!

Wooo Success, but the convergence did not even stop there!

Corey then busted out her IMac, and jumped onto ITunes(yes she’s a Mac, I’m a PC…on the verge of Mac-hood) and began downloading the song.

At the same time, I jumped on Amazon and did the same with my phone…who needs a computer these days!

Basically, it is absolutely crazy how much can be done from a pocket-sized device, and also the commercial may have inspired us to start looking into future travel plans…Maybe New Years in Vegas?! I can only hope!

So there is my converging from the couch story…from TV, to phone, to internet, to computer, and eventually it will be put onto our IPods for sure! Who would have thought so much could come from one commercial! Way to go Vegas and Neon Trees! It amazes me every time something like this happens and I realize how far technology has come. I can’t imagine having been able to do this just a few years ago, it shows how technology is affecting us, and how we need to be constantly entertained…I don’t even know what TV show we were watching, but I don’t think we ever finished it.

Wamser and the…wait who?!

Hey there, my name is Kathleen Wamser and this is my 5th year (and final semester) at Champlain, I'm a marketing management major with a certificate in print design.

I am from Chesterfield, NH, a small town right outside of Keene about 2 hours away. I have also previous lived in Massachusetts and in New Zealand while attending other colleges (Merrimack College and Auckland Uni of Technology).

I love adventure and travel.

I also love Photography

This summer I got to enjoy a concert of an artist I had previously listened to while living in New Zealand, Gin Wigmore, playing for free at Battery St Park and saw a considerable difference between the 2 shows and the audience at each. Here is a video of her music.

As a marketing major I love the technology of the 21st century. I have made so many connections through social media and networking that I could have not previously made and I am able to really brand myself by what is put online.
On thing I dislike about the 21st century is the need for constant communication and the fact that people are unable to disconnect from their jobs when they have left the office, I hate getting texts about my job when I am not there :)

As for professional aspirations, I'm getting down to the wire to have to start making decisions. Right now I am in the process of applying to be an English teacher in either Spain or Italy and want to spend a few years traveling and blogging trying to build my brand, eventually I would like to get a job doing some sort of travel marketing or international marketing but until then I plan on living day by day and seeing the world while I can.
